We all are aware that chefs have been dominating the internet space all these years, if you google you would find enough material on chefs, their work and life. But what about bartenders? Especially in India, if compared to chefs, bartenders are not much talked about even after the excellent craft cocktail skills, storytelling and knowledge.
One of the biggest reasons is ‘social media’. In this digital world, every professional needs a strong social media presence, especially bartenders. One needs to showcase their creativity, skills and passion towards their profession to capture the maximum spotlight which would further strengthen and mould the bar communities accordingly.
With the strong digital and offline presence of The Cocktail Story pan India within the bar fraternity, we have been observing the changes and witnessing / capturing bartenders travelling , doing bar guest shifts, posting about their concoctions but the only hassle is the lack of apt knowledge about social media & confidence amongst them.
Why a bartender needs a strong social media presence?

- You need the skill of social media to become a ‘star tender’ from ‘bartender’.
- The cocktail world is all about the cocktail craft but along with the presentation, as bartenders or brand ambassadors, your job is to sell an experience and your social media should highlight that.
Due to the covid-19 crisis, bartenders have ample time to work on their social profiles, here are a few basic tips to upgrade your social media presence as a Bar Professional.
1.CHOOSE YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORM
We suggest it should be Instagram, as it has more than 1 billion active users and has a higher engagement rate than Facebook. Work on your Instagram.
Bartenders are no less than artists, you must have a public profile or even suggested is that you opt for ‘business profile’ in Instagram to benefit with its features like know your ‘insights’.
3.BIO IS IMPORTANT
Make sure to choose a relevant username to a relevant profile picture, it should reflect what you do. Fill up everything, if you don’t have your own website, keep on adding links of the articles you read or like to share with the rest of the world.

Speak about your work through your Instagram feed. Decide the tone of your posts, as a bartender you are trained to maintain cleanliness & hygiene, in the same way don’t cluster your Instagram feed with your personal pictures (except for your passion that talks about you as an individual. (Tobias Carvalho love for singing which is quite evident from his Instagram. People know him as a bartender in India who sings and makes some brilliant cocktails)
5. STAY CONSISTENT
Post regularly at Optimum time. You can figure out through your profile insights that when are the maximum followers active and make sure to post accordingly to achieve the best results.
6. STORIES ARE BIG
Easy, quick and cool updates, for more & more people to see you are active. We also have several fun editing options for stories on Instagram, use them.
7. PICTURES ARE THE GAME CHANGER
It goes without saying that in the digital age, we eat, drink and shop with our eyes. From lighting to staging, make sure your photos at least offer some aesthetic value.
8. APPROPRIATE CONTENT
As a bartender you can never run short of content, you know it all right from the craft to techniques to ingredients to garnishes. Write it all, place it well and be unique.
9. HASHTAGS ARE EVERYTHING
Hashtags on Instagram is the categorisation of content which makes it more discoverable. Anyone who clicks on a hashtag or searches for it will see a page with all the posts tagged with it.

- Use hashtags that influential people in your industry are using
- Use branded hashtags when posting a picture with the brand
- Consider related hashtags
- Save hashtags for future use

10. ENGAGE WITH THE COMMUNITY
The basic key to grow quickly is by cross promotion. Get to know your community, reach out in real life and online with fellow bartenders. Go to other bars and meet other bartenders, attend masterclasses and interact. Promote other people, tag and lift them up. Be a cheerleader for other people and other accounts, and it will come back to you.
